Weber question
 

So.... I got these Weber 46’s off pelican.
Thought they were a good deal till I took them apart and had missing jets, emulsion tubes. Fuel screens. The chokes were frozen in. But after soaking in toxic chemicals I got them out and bought new ones.
The seller has not been helpful at all in refunding me for the missing parts.
Now a closer look the shafts look bad (rusty) to me. Should I soak them some more or take them apart further?

I think you are going to have a heck of a time getting those butterfly screws out even if you soak them. Looking at the amount of rust on them even after you get the screws out it is going to be tough getting the shafts out.

The shafts look like they are shot. I would think the carbs will need to be refurbished. New shafts and bushings will be needed.

Wow, that certainly sucks. You asked "shafts tight?" and he said yes...tight with rust? Not like it was a small amount of money, either. I hate it when we get boned by a fellow enthusiast.

Too bad about this mess... but I don't understand the $$$ for old Webers when you can purchase new PMOs for not much more.

I've seen 46's for $6000.00 , so it seems you got what you payed , although nothing that can't be fixed .

That's bs Richey. They were advertised as good and shafts tight. Not missing parts and rusted beyond use. You'd be *****ing about it if it were you in his shoes.
He actually seems pretty calm about wasting $3+K.
I'd be getting my money back one way or another.
No Pelicanites should be profiting by screwing over another member and if he didn't know then he should give the money back and deal with his rusted crap himself.

5 years ago I got $2700 for these USA-made Webers that had been gone thru by me pretty extensively over a period of 3 years of use. I felt they were well used but still had a lot of life left in them. They were in known solid condition to be sale-able.

Bowls were clean, good floats, good float valves and top cover cap screws, PMO fuel bars, new main chokes were a nice tight fit, aux. venturis were shimmed and surfaced to make a tight fit (when these are loose you are giving away a HUGE amount of low rpm power), resurfaced accel. pump bodies to eliminate leaks, etc. Description indicates what issues I had to address in the time I used them on my engine.

Sure I undersold them but USA Webers tend to get a bad reputation and people don't want to pay a premium for them. Nowadays Webers are much more expensive given the 911 market craze. But I would still expect decent, operational condition for that price I asked if they were sold at that same price today. I would not expect something that requires a complete overhaul like the pictures above show.

Those carbs will never operate reliably unless they are completely taken apart. "Shafts are tight." Sure they are when they're that rusted?!?! I'd be demanding my money back and taking a flight to Portland if I don't get it.

Hopefully he'll make it right.

Seafeye please keep us informed how it goes and we'll do whatever we can to help. At least I will and I'm sure there's a lot of other members who'll help.

Looks like a pretty serious lack of disclosure on the sellers part if badly rusted shafts weren’t mentioned, and isn’t willing to take them back.

If you paid with PayPal, looks into a filing a dispute.

I guess I should have asked more questions? In any event there was no disclosure of missing parts. I could just file a PayPal claim, I’d just like to get the parts that were supposed to be there. I’ve soaked the carbs and scrubbed them. Two of the shaft screws aren’t ever coming out. I’ll have to cut them if I decide to put in the 8.2mm shafts. My mechanic says we should be able to get them to run. Should.
Worst case is I have to replace the shafts. About $300. I did find some plastic 911S velocity stacks. I’m excited about those. A friend has a ultrasonic machine that I’m going to dunk the carb bodies in for a couple hours tomorrow.
None of the passages are blocked so there is some good news.
