SWB distributor question

Using my original 1966 cases, we've just finished a 2.5 liter short stroke build using Webers 40IDAs.

Q: the original engine was equipped with Solex carbs. Must we alter the distributor in some way ?

The timing is quite far advanced yet still the motor bogs in the 2,000-3,000 rpm range. It also wants an idle set around 1200 rpm.

Any help is appreciated.

Did you have the distributor rebuilt? You are describing classic symptoms of worn distributor advance springs, that will provide 45 degrees advance at high RPM, enough to blow up your new motor, and yet not return to idle, causing you to have too much advance, and therefore a 1200 rpm idle.

What is the advance at idle? at 3000? At 6000 without load? (be careful testing at that speed).

Advance curve is a function of camshaft choice not carburetor choice put perhaps you mean Solex cams, not solex carbs.
