2.7 Cylinder heads - New or Rebuild?
 

So I've found a place with new 2.7 Heads with valves for 131.90
plus shipping and requiring exchange (So I get to pay for shipping twice). I do understand that the valve guides on the 2.7 are not that durable. Would I be better off just having mine rebuilt with the new guides, or are the new heads worth the Delta (about $300 plus shippingx2) ? I expect the shipping is not going to be cheap...the heads would be going home...to the motherland...

$300 exchange plus whatever amount for shipping sounds pretty reasonable considering a valve job on your old heads will cost $400 & up.

Sorry - I wasn't clear. Long day and very tired...The heads are about $800 ($139 US per head) plus shipping - $300 delta over the cost of the rebuilt heads. And I have to return my heads to Germany.

I'm just wondering if the extra money is worth new heads or would I actually be better off with rebuilt heads with the improved valve guides?

usually, there is no exchange on new parts. they're probably reconditioned. you can have your own heads done for about $900-$1000, with all new guides, valves, springs, flycut, etc. Ollie's, and Competition engineering are both in your area.

I agree that the price seems to be low for new, but that is what it states. They also sell used for about 1/2 that price.

My real question is if these are new, am I creating a problem with the old material guides?

if they're 'new old stock" as in made in '77 and been sitting on the shelf since then, they would have the copper guides that didn't last very long. i haven't heard of any freshly produced, non factoty new heads lately, but i'm sure that porsche still could provide them, but the cost would be up there. hard to say what they are.

MittleMotor does have some secret mole at the factory that can get unusual stuff. However, I would *not* recommend using New Old Stock (NOS) heads on your rebuild. The newer valve guides are much, much better. Walt at Competition Engineering uses custom-sized ones from Technovance...

That is what I was trying to find out. A complete valve job is less expensive than the new, and I thought it would be better.
