2.2S upgrade
I'm starting to plan this winthers projects.
I have a very very nice '69 set up for fast road and track. Transmission is brilliant (best 901 I've ever tried) and the engine is a fresh original 2.2S (not original to the car - it was a 2.0T). Its ok fast and and feels good but.....not 250hp to 900kg fast, as my Targa was. And since I can leave nothing alone I've been thinking about what to do? I could just drive it yes..... Stroke it? And twin plug of course. Keep S cams and call it a day? expect 30ish hp if I'm lucky? Go SS? 2.4ss with 87.5 slip-fit Nickies (much more expensive). with 10.5CR and twin plug. will need to install squirters in the case. Or 2.5ss which requires spigot machining. Any of your guys done these mods? |
Wow, another 2,2 upgrade?
I had a SS2,5, but with E cams. Sweet running motor. With 10.5 -1 CR and a Mod S cam and dual plugs, it would be a screamer. Does your motor still have the MFI? You may want to sell the S motor and use the $$$ to build something like a 2,8. Just a thought. |

I guess the real question was: is it blasphemy to tear down an original and very good running 2.2s engine? I just like the mfi and the vintage feel of the 2.2. My other builds are all EFI and they are very different in performance. |

2.2S engine is probably the pinnacle of the early 911 driving character. snappy response. Raw in sound and appeal. High revving. I wouldn't touch it.
But if I were to touch it... 2.5 (66x90) would be my choice. Don't cut the original 2.2S case. Sell it and buy a 2.7 case to build on. |
I agree that a 2.2S engine seems too valuable to be used as a base for a heavily modified engine. But it's your money!
