Timing Chain Master Link or Not
If I have taken the timing chain housings off and cam towers off to remove the heads for a valve job, should I buy a replacement timing chain with a master link or one without?
My understanding is the replacement timing chains with the master link are for replacing the chain with the timing chain housing still on. In my situation I want a new timing chain with continuous links? |
If you're not splitting the case, you have no choice. You'll need the ones with the master link.
If you're splitting the case, go with the continuous ones; you don't have the worry of the tiny e-clips falling out and ending up on the drain plug magnet. Or worse. If they weren't worn, just reuse the originals. There are various ways to check. One is to note the distance that the tensioner plunger sticks out of the bore before disassembly. |
I do not plan on splitting the case and it makes sense you have to get the Master link when not splitting.
My right side timing chain sprocket had a missing tooth so I figured I need to replace that and since they should be replaced in pairs I thought it made sense to replace the chain. '82 SC 3.0 with 88K miles. I just had the heads removed and freshened with valve guides so I'm ready to put it all back together. |
I would replace the chains and sprockets. Not real expensive and the chains do stretch The eclip is never falling off if you put it on correctly which is very easy. No down side.
