Internal Oil Thermostat Seal?
I've removed my internal oil thermostat and discovered someone had previously used a black sealant around the top. No sealant was listed in the Engine rebuild book. Could an experienced builder advise, is any sealant up there necessary? I haven't yet determined if the internal thermostat was leaking, or it was the breather cover or oil line. The engine oil cooler looks like it has some sealant on it too, but I haven't pulled it yet...

I just realized the overall picture I posted was after I cleaned up the thermostat area. Here is a picture of what it looked like pre-cleaning:

I had problems with some O ring seals being able to leak going back several years. I started putting 574 above the O ring seal. Just part of the install now. If there is a leak, carrera is the only simpler replacement, SC in the car is a nightmare Turbo, you replace the seal when you pull the motor for a valve adjustment. Bruce

Hi Bruce, thanks for the info. To be clear, are you putting 574 on the cylindrical portion above the oring, or are you putting it on the flange of the thermostat where it meets the top of the engine case? Or both? Thanks!

FWIW, on my motor, I noticed a rough area in the bore for my thermostat. I smoothed it with some emory. However, my motor was apart. I would check the bore, just to be sure there isn't a problem, and use Curl-t on the new O-ring.
