Trying BTR TO BTR III Motronic. Is it cost prohibitive?

Hello everyone here! This is my fist time on this engine rebuilding section of 911 tech forum. It's a pleasure to meet you! I was recommended to post my question here for better feedback by Mr. Matt Monson.

Now I've posted pretty much the same already on Marketplace, Classifieds WTB, and Technical forum since yesterday. I'll try to say it differently here so it doesn't get boring.

On one hand, a bump of 34 HP would be just fine!! At what cost would it be worth? For me, it's more about originality on the car I have, and not about the HP. Of course I'd like ultimate Horse Power and originality combined. The issue is cost vs desire and possibility.

Cutting to the chase, I would need Bosche MP 1.2 ecu (with RUF chip), engine harness, fuel rails, more than one or two fuel pumps, the 12 injectors, sensors, and someone told me intake manifold too possibly. Before I go to Ruf with an inquiry, what are my chances of fining all of the necessary components used?

Thank you all for your advice/insights!

bernie

Bernie,

Sent you PM about this.

We have in our parts inventory an original Bosch MP 1.2 system. The red top ECU and a full air cooled 962 engine harness.

My memory is slightly jaded, but I do remember the system we have uses a TPS unlike the 956 system that used ignition points for idle and WOT. I think they were both 1.2.

Sounds like Neil is a great starting point for you!

For anything that Neil can't help you with, I'd give Chris at Turbokraft a call - he's a massive RUF fan, and has dealt with them previously (he also speaks fluent German, which is always handy when trying to hustle for parts!). I know he also met up with Alois and Estonia, last year I think, when they were over in the US prior to what looks to be their current tour (according to YouTube!)

Contact RUF first. If they can't help, start looking elsewhere. If you get stuck, email me, one of my staff previously managed the RUF NA brand.

Cheers

Thank you Neil! I just sent you back PM on that. My ignorance on the tech and terms is going to come to bear real quick. TPS and WOT are a couple more I don't know, but I'm learning slowly I hope. I'm in over my head, but that's why I'm here.

Much appreciated Spenny_b! By the way I love that Mr. Bean pic. I often use Mr Bean in my classroom for teaching prepositional verbs to Japanese Uni students. I love the British sense of humour and they seem to relate to the formal culture. So I'll keep your fine advise in mind as I take it slow and try not to make many mistakes on this idea of mine.

Cheers!

Hi Jeff,

That sounds like a good idea too. As the Chinese say, be careful what you ask for! What worries me is the price they might give me. I did start a draft email to them over a month ago, but I didn't send it. Eye watering prices are not what I need at the moment.

The good news is that the motor in question is in Europe still and will be for several months. It would be easy to ship to them. For the moment however, I still have some time to see if I can do it with a little help and some, rather all of the right parts. I will finish out the email and/or call them soon. You're right in saying this is the best, easiest/fastest solution, if only I had the dosh!

I haven't contacted Ruf yet, or any other party that was mentioned here. Just not time and/or time zones to entertain the idea via phone. That is next strategy given time. I have been talking with Neil a bit. What I get or am getting from everyone is that old tech is out of fashion, newer tech is in. Though I wanted to stay/go back original, it seems to me at this point an up hill battle via originality for future salability. That was my strategy -- go vintage.

Just a little feedback on responses and Neil's analysis. Still some inquiry to do on my part. Neil hasn't given me a price on ecu and engine harness. It is for sale though. I will go slow so as not to make too many mistakes.

A race engine builder advised to be very careful about buying an MP 1.2 system unless I've seen it running myself. He's in the UK and currently building a 962 engine water/water as he put it. What he said is these computers are 30 years old. He doesn't even know people with the hardware to program them. I might! Nevertheless, he said people are pulling the guts out of them and reinstalling Motech systems in them just to keep them looking original.

Where does that leave me with what I should do with my idea of motronic BTR III with MP 1.2 system and all the other parts I will need to go BTR III SPEED?

Hey Jeff, I did finally call Ruf last evening. Mr. Ruf (Marcel) has told me they can do an upgrade to BTR III, will test it on dyno etc. No prices were discussed, just possibilities. The invitation to send the motor is there direct from the horses mouth. I'm scared sh-tless, knowing this ain't gonna be cheap, albeit the possible right move while the motor is still in Europe.
