Oil pump and by-pass modification, again...
I have looked threads about this over the years and still don't know is there right or wrong answer;
I'm building bone stock 1967 2.0 (ok, it has NOS 2.0S birals and pistons+Solex cams but stock otherwise), only modification for alu case is oil by-pass modification. So no piston squirters and no external oil cooler. Ollie's, who did that by-pass mod, said that std aluminium oil pump from 2.0 is OK even if they do by-pass mod. But it has said million times that you should use 4-rib (or better) oil pump if by-pass mod is done. So is 2.0 alu oil pump sufficient with oil by-pass modification or should I try to source SC oil pump? For hotter engine I'll use at least SC pump, but currently I only have good 3.2 pumps which I don't want to use it as I want to keep original sump plate, and that original 2.0 aluminium oil pump in good condition. The oil by pass mod only makes any oil pump you use work better. Without mod you are bypassing extra oil from the pressure side of the pump into the sump where it has to be removed by the scavenge side of the pump and pumped back to the tank. With the oil by pass mod excess oil is diverted from the outlet of the pressure side of the pump back into the inlet of the pressure side. With the mod you have less oil in sump and more in the tank which is good. no down side.
