Piston / Valve clearance

I am in the midst of doing a minor rebuild on an 81sc. I did not take my cylinder heads / cams apart as it was recommended as a time saver and they were all redone X number of miles ago and my goal was really to repair the head studs which are now repaired.

All that said I am now a bit confused as to the orientation the valves should be in when putting them back on when the engine is at TDC. I feel the piston touching the valves as I slowly slowly slowly turn the engine over which obviously is a recipe for disaster.

point me in the right direction.
