Apparently there were some undersized cranks that allowed a loose crank gear. Happened to a friends SC motor.

Yes, I have been in touch with at least 1 person who experienced that issue. I will have my crank assessed by the machine shop when they re-open to see if I have the same problem. I'm hoping that by removing the crank gear, I do not cause a problem that wasn't originally there.

In the meantime, I managed to mount the dial gauge and got consistent readings of around 0.09mm clearance, which is approx double the maximum amount allowed. At this stage, i'm thinking this is the source of my so-called knock at around idle speeds. When I had the engine running, I used a stethescope and was only able to hear the feint knock when probing the case around the nose bearing... specifically near the distributor housing and the stud that joins the case perimeter at that location.
