Fabulous build. Wow

Quick update. Long block is assembled. Had some delays on the induction and engine controls (Rasant had some coating issues that needed to be corrected, a bit irritating, but they are addressing, those are back in hand, and they look amazing...) we should have all of that in hand next week to finish the motor and get it on the dyno SOON, I hope, then into the car...

Several, several vendor/supplier delays as nearly every part inside this motor has been made to spec. COVID, plus "custom", plus normal "custom cars, custom problems" type issues....

The engine went together very well and all tolerances and rotating frictions are way beyond what the shop expected.

Hopefully a running update with HP estimates soon.

It's exciting to watch this build come together. Going to be an amazing engine once it is completed! Andrew built my 3.2SS (the engine in the white car pictured on the first page), and I couldn't be happier with it. See you up on the Crest this spring??

Yes! I know, I talked to you early on with this process and you sold me on working with Andrew. I am having a different builder doing the motor, but he's supplied all the induction, wiring, and engine controls/management. Its quite custom and he was very good to work with on all the bits we are putting on this motor. We had a couple bumps but everything is in hand and the parts look fantastic.

Yes, it'll be out in malibu, crest, etc soon!

She’s about done. Of course while in there got me. Lots of other chassis stuff and trans and gearbox work.

Engine rips. (Butt dyno says it’s faster than my mild built 964) 7800 peak power 8300 redline power from 5200 up. Tuned on ****ty ca 91 gas. Bill rader nailed the ratios.

Should have it home in a week or 2.

Sounds fantastic!
Interested in what the dyno reveals...

quick update...

Its running well. I just dropped it back at the shop monday for a final valve adjust, look over, and one final tweak to the programming (which is near spot on). Oh, and to cork it up a bit to make it a bit more tolerable round town :-) LOVE the Motec M130 EFI, thing runs/starts/idles/cold/hot start just like a modern car. FRIGGEN AWESOME.

They are going to do one more dyno session next week. On ****ty CA 91 octane gas and revs set at 8200 its doing a little over 250 wheel. Power comes on hard at just over 4k and i had bill rader put a shorter stack box in it (he nailed it). Car weighs a tick over 2100 lbs so the power feels... adequate?
Dyno is a ... oh i forgot not dynojet. Reads similar to mustang I believe and when converted to crank is in line with what they see from PMNA dyno. They have a built 4.1L 964 doing 320 wheel on that same dyno so I suspect its in the ballpark and running strong. Probably making just under 300 crank I guess, which on ****ty CA gas I'm happy with. Runs cool too. Been in high 90s inland here and running around up in the hills a carrera cooler up front with elephant lines running around 190-200F.

Outstanding update! The car sounds like a real ripper. I’ve been waiting on a MoTec M130 unit for my build and its been a few months with no news of delivery timing. Also waiting for P&C’s from Mahle, rods from Carillo and cams (can’t recall who grinding them). Everything is taking forever these days.

Your engine build has been a great inspiration to me, glad its put a big smile on your face!!

Like all these projects they always take longer than you think. When i started this we got hit with a global pandemic, that strung out all the lead times, some suppliers were very optimistic in their delivery, some quality issues on parts that had to be reworked… the lead engine builder got very sick (he’s back and fully recovered now!), we bought a new house, gut interior remodel, moved, etc… so stuff just gets in way. You know, custom cars, custom problems.

We’re finally in the new place, garage not quite finished but I’ve got room for my 3 sports cars now and get them all back here so I can enjoy them. My 964 and 997RS are NOT happy with me for leaving them parked the last 9mo…. !!!!

Good news is socal, all year is driving season! :-) !!!!!

Oh we sorted out what we’re doing to do on the muffler… i have an M&K sport. its sounds frigggen good on power, it drones like crazy around town. I put the SSI stainless muffler on, and it is good, but a little too quiet. So I’m going with the SSI that PMS modifies and puts dual outputs on it, will try that and see if it’s a happy middle ground. That will be here Tuesday. Will get car on dyno next week and wrap it up.

Now, if anyone has a lead on some 7R wheels, i need a little more rubber out back!

Wow, 8200 rpm? Mine reaches peak at just over 7k, and honestly the torque curve feels like shifting just below 7k keeps the acceleration up. I used Pauter rods etc. more as missed shift high rev "insurance". :).
Initially I had a 2 in 2 out M&K with headers (no heat), and loved the sound and light weight. Since then I had a dansk muffler modified inside, and added two 2 1/2" exit pipes centered 12" apart. It's the "old school" design we used to make back in the '70s. Also switched to Bursch headers. The sound is a little louder than the M&K, crisper, with a bit more mechanical snarl. For my taste, it is perfect. You are going to love your engine, I can't wait to see it in person!!!!!!! Congratulations.

This little thing just keeps pulling to redline, the dyno graphs show it - the motec has a nice 'graceful' cutoff at the redline too which is nice - easy on the motor. Rods I have a GT3 Titanium with a supertech custom crankshaft. Heads were done by xtreme, rockers are pauter billet. etc...

I had M&K build me a custom header set with heat. They are very nicely made, we modified the design of the heat boxes a bit, and actually they changed the design recently, to allow more clearance. But they seem to work well.

The muffler I have coming I bet is the same you have. The standard 2 in, 1 out, modified internal, cap the side exit, 2 2 1/2 center exits.... I said SSI but I think it's a Dansk in stainless.

We'll give that a go it'll be here tomorrow actually. I'm ok if I lose some HP up top, just need to quiet it down a bit!

David 23 08-16-2022 08:04 AM

Your new muffler sounds like it is exactly like mine. Again, congratulation on this engine, it is amazing!!!!!!!

Love your car and project.
Like the look and feel of the 1970-71 cars particularly with more power and a well set up chassis and transmission.

spyerx 06-27-2023 08:24 AM

Little update:

Car runs great, BBI really nailed the tuning. The Dansk modded muffler quieted it down a lot, tho it's still rowdy, I like it.

EFI is so good, it just starts, hot/cold, idles, doesn't stall, just a little clear out at cold start and thats it.

Put about 2k miles on it, doesn't burn any oil at all, runs cool, even on warm days (like 180 or a needle above on the gauge).

Do have a drip or 2 of oil that'll address after I do the next service and check the valve lash, give it a once over.

Very happy with the project. And, the car hauls ass!
