can you suggest a degreaser safe for magnesium ?
Looking for something to use on my 2.2T rebuild, preferably something I don't need to babysit. I don't want to worry about leaving it on the case too long and ruining it. What do you guys use?

I'm doing a 2.2 right now.
I soak it in safety kleen, dry it, power wash it then spray it with sams club degreaser, let it set for a few minutes and power wash it again. Magnesium is naturally dark. After building, there is a spray can of sealant that comes from a boat store that sprayed on and seals the magnesium surface. Bruce |

Hi Bruce,
Actually, Mg is a shiny silvery metal in its natural state. ![]() ![]() Since it has two valance electrons, its highly reactive and bonds with oxygen to oxidize and its the magnesium oxide that gives it its dark color after being exposed to air. This is why it needs to always be coated to prevent terminal corrosion.

I don't even bother with degreasing anymore. I run the case halves over to the machine shop, have them hot tank it (50 bucks) and then have them soda blast it (150). It comes out looking like virgin metal.
For mag, you can then spray the outside with clearcoat or whatever to protect it. This process alone has saved me tons of time with case cleaning. No more toothbrushes, no more hours spent fiddling and cleaning crevices. Get the case soda blasted and start building it the moment it comes back. |

Far as I know any automotive machine shop does this in house. They use Soda because it doesn't matter if it all washes out or not - it is inert and dissolves eventually so totally safe for motors. |

LA totally awesome, if you want to put it in long term dilute it. I run about 2:1 one part water. You have to wash it with soap and water when done. It will get it clean enough to use, but it won't give you a shiny case.
Super cheap.

What would be a good coating product on a freshly cleaned magnesium engine case? Thanks,

For a clear coat there is nothing better than Cerakote, if you don,t want to mask and spray use Gibbs oil

When I had BMW airhead bikes I had good luck with uncoated mag wheel cleaner (mold phosphoric acid, I think) followed by Simple Green.
