964 heads and 993 cam tower/cam

I am building up from scratch 3.6 hot rod engine so intake and exhaust differences between the two can be accounted for in parts choice.

So what I'm trying to make sure of before purchase is can a good set of 964 heads be installed under a 993 cam tower?

Or odder but more straight forward question: outside of intake/exh flange bolt pattern could you install 964 heads in a 993 long block? Not a 993 "car".

Interested to hear this as well. I understand that some builders have used 964 cam housings with 993 heads to use pre-95 rockers and camshafts but haven’t seen 964 heads on a 993 base motor.

For a hot rod engine, I would think you should find a set of variorum 993 heads. First, 993 heads use a better alloy (RR530 - same as Turbo heads) and the varioram heads have bigger intake and exhaust valves (50/43.5).

Of course you could have any 993 head redone with bigger valves.

If you really want to hot rod the engine, get some Xtreme heads...or at least have Xtreme do their full monty on 993 heads.

I know in the end, your (Winders) likely right. Probably seeing the trees despite the forest in trying to use a good valued set of heads. There are just a lot more 964 heads floating around. I agree with you Rusty911, It was a lot more common for guys to look to solid cam boxes for track use. I've wanted to build a driver out of this ( I love my 2.7 mfi, but not totally modern performance) and use the RS hyd cams. Little off beaten path, but trying to make each car have its own personality. I've a raunchy 900hp turbo, to mfi to C4s to the V8 14.

Shouldn't have passed on those Xrtreme on here a while back. Thanks for your opinions if NOT an answer yet.

Yes, you can run the 964 heads on the 993 cam towers... I do. The one thing that you need to be sure is to run a 993 style cam that has the oil groove on the cam bearing closest to the cam gear. That's how oil gets to the cam journals and the rockers. I use the 993 rocker shafts with pre993 solid rockers with a grooved bushing with no oil hole.
