Gap between newly installed engine and new tin gasket

I just finished installing my rebuilt engine in my 1982 SC. While the engine was out, I installed new engine compartment tin gaskets. After getting the engine installed, there’s about a 1” gap between the engine tins and gasket. The long side of the gasket has 2 flaps - does one go above and one below the tins? I can work some of the gasket to do that, but it just pops upward. Suggestions?

Yes,you have to pull the lower flap down all around the perimeter.

You can sometimes do it with you fingers and may need to use a tool to help if it’s a tight fit.
