New cast iron cylinders for 2.7 rebuild?
 

I'm rebuilding a 2.7.

Bad leakdown and excessive oil consumption.

Turns out, it has badly worn alusil cylinders.

So I've looked for replacements and found a package from Design911 (England) consisting of 90mm cast iron cylinders with JE pistons 9.5cr. No CE gasket on top of cylinders.

What is your opinion on that? Price is very good indeed, about 2500$ for at p/c set. They also do a slip-fit 92mm for a 2.8 big bore. Same price.

The cast iron cylinders work fine but IMO a CE ring groove should be machined. Measure everything of course.

It sounds like they are QSC cylinders which come without CE ring grooves.
I'm currently using the same 90mm,s for my 2.5 , I'm lucky in having the use of a lathe and was able to add them. I actually contacted QSC for there opinion on this and did not get a reply.

You can have them Nikasiled.

Think before writing. I am not sure whether the pistons for Alusil are compatible with Nikasil cylinders, and I may have this issue confused with mixing KS with Mahle. Sorry for the runaround. Bob

Haha - well I didn't really think about that. Might actually be a viable option with new JE pistons.

But then again, with the other option we can go 2.8 for the same price.

You're probably right. They're called 'retro performance' at Design911.

I was wrong about the price, it's only 2000$ for a complete set.

My thinking was I will only be using the car for cruising on sunny days so why go to the expense of building a competition engine !

Why not sent your Alusil cylinders out to be coated with Nickasil. You would need new pistons from JE or CP but you could pick what you want. Nickasil will wear better than cast iron and Aluminum has better cooling. EBS does these on an exchange basis.

And while you are at it have them bored to 92. Might be worth the extra $$.

Thats my current plan. Cost is about the same, but I get nikasil and a CE gasket. Win-win.

Add JE 9.5cr pistons and this should be a happy little engine again.
