Good point. I assumed you were talking about the cylinder to head interface.

How does this metal-to-metal, no-gasket head sealing method work out in the long run? I'd think some sort of copper o-ring and groove system would provide a more positive seal. No issues here?

A stock 930 rebuild uses no sealing gasket between the cylinder and head. When building a higher performance 930,sometimes the cylinder and the head is machined to recieve a nirosist ring. Its almost an interference fit between the nirosist ring, the cylinder and the head. This helps keep the cylinder sealed when pushing higher than stock boost.

The aluminum is soft - so it sortof acts as it's own gasket. It's common not to run a gasket on the VW air cooled engines...

It's interesting that my '77 930 engine (3.0) DOES use a CE-style sealing gasket between cylinder and head. I guess when the factory went to 3.3 they decided it was unnecessary.

Did the same when they moved from 3.0L to 3.2
