You can only say it is two 911 motors because the 917 is 6 cylinders times 2.
The 911 being a Boxter, has a separate crank throw for each cylinder. The 917 shares a crank throw with opposing cylinders. Some like to term that a " flat Vee". Reference to the shared crank throws in a V8. |

Yup worked fine for me too - great post, thanks!
That's it, I'm off to trawl YouTube for a series on another flat 12 rebuild, and I'm damn well going to now start reading my Mezger biography.

Chrome's been playing-up for me bigtime recently, denying access to some of our firewalled servers that previously worked fine, refusing to load advert links from their own search engine, etc....I got pi55ed off with it in the end, switched to Firefox last week. At the moment I'm enjoying it more than Chrome (but things always change...)

Yeah, I have to keep both Chrome and Firefox open and switch between them depending on the source. Then again my computer is running XP.
![]() Back to our originally scheduled thread.... Very cool video. Interesting that they fired it up with no turbos on the dyno....

The 912 engine (yes, the engine in the 917 is called 912, and has nothing to do with the 912 car...) has nothing in common with the 901/911/930 engines. The type 912 engine is a 180 degrees V12, obviously the 911 is a boxer. The type 912 has a titanium crank shaft and connecting rods, the 911 used steel. The type 912 had four overhead cam shafts, the 911 had two. Looking closely at the crank case, it looks nothing like two 911 cases welded together. the list of differences goes on and on.

Interestingly,
the crankshaft in the early 917 engines was a two piece design, that was epoxied together in the center. The reason they did that, from what I understand, was that they had a problem machining the center gear with the crank in one piece. And if you look at the cylinder heads, they have a 908 part number. |

I read the entire crank was built up.
Are those Bosch silver coils?
