996 Turbo Oil Pump for 1976 930

Hi guys, My 1976 930 has been parked for 4 years due to a broken head stud or two. After I took it out of a 17 or 18 year hibernation and did a full paint and interior refresh I threw the engine and transmission back in to refresh my memory on what neglected maintenance was needed. In short order I remembered that it had several oil leaks and upon an attempt to re-torque the head studs found one broken and parked it until I could properly rebuild the engine. While on the slippery slope I was wondering if a 996 Turbo Oil Pump might be a good upgrade to help cool this non-intercooled 930? What say ye? Rahl __________________

The 76 turbo used a magnesium four rib oil pump, later magnesium was removed for aluminum housing. The 78 turbo used a cast iron and aluminum combination and increased size and flow.
Changing pumps sometimes has a problem with crank clearances on the counter balances because cranks do change in production and you’re talking changes over 40 years. I would consider a straight turbo pump. Note, the 76 turbo used 24 dilivar studs. Bruce |

(I have hear that it is the main webs of the engine case that need clearancing to run either of the turbo pumps. I would consider a straight turbo pump. I have already purchased the factory 996 turbo dilivar Head Studs) (I have also read that the piston oil squirters might need to be replaced with the larger, later oil squirters. Check length on the 996 head studs as the factory made dilivar longer for water cooled.
The all aluminum pumps came with the 3.6 NA and show wear problems on rebuilds. My money would go to the cast iron turbo pump for longevity. Bruce |

Hi Bruce, thanks for the reply!
I was wondering about the wear issue of the 996 all aluminum oil pump but didn't have any information on it. A contributor to the crosspost in the 930 forum commented: "Get some steel gears for that 996 pump like 964 otherwise that big pump will eat your aluminum gear and create some pretty good gear lash due to premature wear." Is this a known issue or just a one-off? I will check my 996 turbo dilivar head studs for length. Do you know the two different lengths? Thanks again, Rahl

I know the difference, saw them at the shop.
The 993 dilivar are the ones you would want but they are crazy expensive, 10mm threaded whole length Got to admit, Henry’s Supertec studs with the fine threads are all around choice pieces. Bruce |

Those sound like the ones I bought about a year ago, fully threaded and expensive! Henry's head studs and other parts are great, and Henry is a great guy too. I like him a lot, he has treated me well.
