				checking gear teeth

I have a noob question. Is there some way to measure the teeth on my intermediate shaft gears, chain gears, etc...?? Given that I have no experience with Porsche engines, I have no idea if the gears are needing to be replaced. The teeth aren't broken, but could be worn down.. or they could be perfectly fine.

There are specific gages to measure gear teeth. Gear teeth come in different designs. each design regardless of size will conform to that design and gage. Aluminum or steel gears should be crack checked. A good visual check typically shows up wear points. A good way for the DIY is to check the back lash at different points around the gear. This often will show up worn teeth. If I'm remembering correctly, I think the spec shows a way to measure the gear teeth with balls or pins. Check this. I could be wrong here and given you wrong info. | ||
