964 cylinder question
 

I have the late style heads but the cylinders are chipped. A also have a beautiful set of early p and c’c. Trying to figure out if the early cylinders can be machined to work with late style heads? The mating surface is the same height on both but the early cans would have to go down a couple mm to get a flush surface.... any way for this to work?

You can have the cylinders repaired. Chipped I guess you are referring to the plating coming apart.

After talking with Steve at Rennsport this am, I think I’m going to have mine repaired. A shame, these early ones are sooo nice. Oh well, somebody will need them and be happy. Off to the classifieds they go... boo lol

the problem with the early P&C is that the heads do not mate to the cylinders where the studs pass. You can see on your pics of cylinders that the later cylinders are the same lever across the entire surface. With out the support at the studs the early cylinders warp the heads when torqued down and this caused them to leak.

Ya, that’s what I learned from Steve. I guess it was wishful thinking based on the condition.... I actually considered back dating the heads. Decided against it.
