chain ramp question
1979 911sc 3.0.
Of the inboard chain ramps, 3 of 4 snapped into position no problem. The lower left ramp will not seat close to the outside edge of the case (like the others) because there is a seam inside the case that prevents this. This is causing me problems in getting the "snap" on the holding bolt. Does this sound right - it cannot just be my case? I am nervous about prying so hard against this last ramp to lock it in place. (NB this is not the brown ramp, that's on the right side bottom). |

I think you're doing this wrong. You don't snap the ramps onto the bolts, and the ramps should not be against the case. I first hold a ramp up to the hole and install the bolt that isn't the one for the ramp clip. It will screw all the way thru the ramp and hold the ramp in place while I start the clip bolt (the inboard one) I use a bent brake adjusting spoon (or anything similar) which allows me to brace the ramp against the the case as I screw in the clip bolt. You will feel the bolt engage the tang, then tighten both bolts and your done. The ramp will be centered under the chain, and there will be about an 1/8th" of bolt sticking out the back of the ramp hole.

Hi Ed - thanks for the response.
I'm doing it the same way you describe. I had to use a long screwdriver to push the ramp back toward the bolt to hear it lock (snap). I guess I didn't wedge it firmly enough as I was screwing in the bolt. The lower left in an SC case is quite different though.....I did manage to lock this one in the end - but the outside end of the ramp cannot seat like the others because of a flange in the case. I hadn't read anything about this, so it caused me a little concern. But all is well now.....onto the next task. |

You need to realize that the ramps have different ends and the long end faces the gear inside motor and at the cam drive.

Thanks - I know that the "long end" of the 4 internal ramps all face inwards. There is still a seam in the left side of the 3.0 case that interferes with the fit of the bottom ramp. I can get the front of the ramp to snap on to the bolt, though the outer part of the ramp cannot sit tight to the case.

Not supposed to fit tight to the case
Once seated you should see a little nipple from the end of the bolt Bruce |

Just did this today, and had exactly the same problem. I ended up using an open end wrench to hold the ramp against the bolt as it was tightened in. It snapped into place and I wiggled the wrench out. Only one bolt hole snaps into the bolt groove. Frustrating system, but I guess it works.

Yeah, only the chamfered end comes through the plastic.

Responses very helpful - thanks. I worked a bit too hard to hold the ramps right against the outer side of the case (hence my issue with the lower left inboard ramp). I relaxed them a little -still holding tight on the inside locking bolt. Yes, maybe just over an 1/8th of the bolt sticking out from the ramp.
