Cam tower weld spot is this normal ?
Just in the process of cleaning and inspecting the components of a 1980 3.0 SC engine and found a strange detail inside one of the cam towers (# 930.105.111.0R). Looks to me like a weld repair. The opposing side cam tower does not show this mark. I would imagine this was done by the factory (resp. the casting manufacturer) to repair some porous spot or other surface defect after casting. Nothing is visible on the machined backside, so it should have been done prior to final machining. Cam tower looks fine otherwise and no signs of any other damage or repair. I do not see any problem with this, but am just curious if this is normal or if it might be an indication the cam tower has been repaired earlier in it΄s life. Appreciate your advice.

Although not common, I have seen spot repairs on cases and other parts when there was a casting defect that came from the factory. If that's what you have and there was no cam tower issues, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the reassurance. Anyway, whoever did the weld repair knew what he was doing and even with modern welding equipment it could hardly be done any better. Not to forget it worked for 40 years.
