Why are Porsche 911 engines "un-rebuildable"?

Hello everyone,,
I have read in multiple instances that the 911 flat 6 is not rebuildable and needs full replacements. Is this true? Does this happen to all generation? or are they talking about the 996 ims issue...

so pretty much all those "builds", "rebuilds" etc on this forum (at least) about exactly what then?

You need to change your reading material. Half the people on this site that’ll add to this thread have rebuilt at least one and some rebuild them all the time.
I’m rebuilding one right now and I have more to do when I finish it.
They’re more complicated and lots more expensive then rebuilding an American or Japanese engine but not hard if you know what you’re doing.

He is probably referring to 996 engines and dealer (Porsche service) in late 996/997 Porsche takes the engine as a core and sells you a “new” unit., Jay.

The M96 engine was a cruel joke. They kept the reliable Mezger engine for the GT and turbo cars but came up with the M96 to save money and IMO was a beta test on Porsche owners. I have 2 apart for owners who don't understand that the cost to rebuild outweighs the value of the car. I have seen many detonate and need replacing. If you want a 996 IMO buy a turbo or GT3. Mezger engines are reliable and rebuildable.

Ummm...I fully rebuilt mine 5 years ago, did most of work myself. Like others have said this may be reference to water cooled engines. Don't tell Jack Raby those can't be rebuilt...
