Check those rocker bushings

So most things going pretty smoothly on my 79SC 3.0 to 3.2 rebuild.
Make sure you do a complete dry run with chain housings. I thought I did that until the real install and after I'd torqued the right-side housing nuts I found I couldn't put the chain over the ramp. That created a little panic and a quick do-over. Cam install and alignment measurement ala straightforward. Then things got really weird as I went to put my Number 1 inlet rocker in place. This is one where access is quite limited at the pulley end. Followed the book, but noticed that as I pushed the shaft through the rocker itself, the rocker itself got pretty tight in between the thin and thick sides of the cam housing. Tightened up the rocker bolt being careful to hold the nut end. Then with the rocker slackened right off and definitely "off cam" the rocker would hardly move. I thought that couldn't be right as how would I adjust valve clearance. More panic - did I not hold the 8mm nut quite well enough, etc? And then just a bit of frustration after some experimenting when I realized I was going to have to remove the rocker shaft for the number 1 cylinder. That was a bit tricky given limited room. OK, when inspecting the rocker I noticed that the bushing (new bushings) was not quite pushed in evenly - so that was causing the binding. 2 minutes work at the vice, put it back in and perfect - nice and loose even when torqued. All other newly bushed rockers look perfect. Why did I choose this one for number 1 cylinder?!

rocker shafts

Always use a propane torch to warm up the areas around the rocker shafts.Most damage is done by a DIY guy removing parts.If you are less than 80 degrees those pins will be snug.So if you warm them up they grow an you will not make a mark which will leak later.Always remember replace the 7mm rocker shaft with the 5mm allen.$90 bucks.Ciao Fred

Fred, so are you saying to replace the rocker shaft, bolt and nut or just the bolt and nut? Thanks

shaft bolts

They are stretch bolts and the end to end length will increase by 1-1.5mm when torqued.Not replacing them is why rocker shafts walk out.I use the ARP assembly lube for the caps on each side of the shaft.Clean the bushing caps and inside the bevel of the shaft with crocus cloth so everything slips together nice.Fred
