Stupid question: what’s the best method to clean gasketed surfaces?

So my typical method involves using a straight razor blade and scraping w the blade perpendicular to the surface. However, on this engine it seems like somebody used some sort of sealer on the gasket surfaces. It’s not soft like silicone but I want things to seal really well, like the timing chain covers and valve covers.

Anybody using any of those 3m roloc pads or what’s the best way to get them super clean without damage?

Roloc discs were specifically prohibited by even GM when under warranty. They remove metal. And the stuff removed flies everywhere and can end up in the crankcase.

Spray gasket remover can be used to remove sealer. It's like paint stripper in a can. Or keep using the razor blades.

Never use the 3m pads or anything like it. You’ll never keep it from getting in the engine. Straight razor blade works well enough for me.

Combo the 2 above posts and your good to go. Also plastic razor blades are easier to use without damaging the case.

A sharp chisel. Less likely to be influenced by non-flat surfaces.
