Yes, thanks guys for the heads up. After about 20 or so 911's I now have one that needs engine work! How about Peter Fisher, or who would you recommend?

Based on your location, Stoddards has a good reputation.

Re: 911 Engine Rebuilders
Quote:
Well, I have used MM (Sep 02 - Feb 03). First of all, I will only relate to issues that effected my dealings with Roy and MM. I was aware that my C Card would be charged for the first 1K. However, several charges were made "without" my consent, that upset me deeply. I called Roy, we talked about it but by then it was too late, the damage was done and charges made without my consent (I had to recover from that shock). That was the last time that was done (but it should never have happened of course). My engine was in terrible shape when I sent it out. Roy made numerous suggestions to my liking, I agreed with them. My overhauling costs sky rocketed but I had a lot of work done so I guess it all evened out based on my agreements. I sure learned to tuck more money aside then expected though. I was in no hurry for the engine to return, I wanted them to take their time on my motor (plus I needed the extra cash to fess up for the new parts required). The engine was built to my specifications and desires. I have yet to actually run it, it is installed but I needed a New or Overhauled Gas tank (mine was shot to hell). Roy suggested Neu Tank in California, they overhauled and sealed, painted my tank for $250.00 with a life time pledge - free from defects (you gotta like that). A new Tank would have been about $1,600.00. It is now being installed and I should be able to turn the key and hope for the best. I asked Roy how long my engine had been run on their test stand, he said between four and twenty hours. He could not say for certain, that was disturbing but I will have to get over it. I too was never told my exhaust (Muffler) was cracked, it was Not returned with the motor. I had to call and ask about it's whereabouts! It was not useable Roy stated but I got deal on a good used after market muffler, so far so good. The shipper they used to get my motor back to me was terrible (SLC side of the trip). Roy and his staff worked hard to get the motor back to me on the day they said they would. I got it back after many phone calls with Roy and he with the shipper at 2100 hrs that evening (I was happy I got it that day at all). The engine looks great, if it runs as good as it looks, I will be a very happy camper! I must have spent double what I thought it would cost to overhaul the engine but in MM's defense, my engine was a basket case! I just hope the (almost) $8k was worth it, that remains to be discovered. I will tell you one thing, the youny lady (whoever she is) ithat is their customer service "Rep" could use some serious training and must realize that she can not (should not) just dip into your Credit Card account without prior authorization. That could be trouble for any company and customer, legal trouble that is. Other then the dis-connects in communication and credit card dealings with MM, I am happy (so far) collectively. Could things have gone smoother, you bet they could have. However, I have not found perfection anywhere in the automotive industry. But I like the looks of their (MM) work, if it runs (as I hope and pray it does) as good as it looks...I will be a very happy man. I would suggest you (anybody) have between six and eight grand available (depending on the work you want done) before engaging in an overhaul with any company (lessons learned for sure). Overall, things (Eng overhaul services) could have been coordinated better between MM and it's customer (me) I had no idea other then what I read about them, I took a risk, but if the engine runs well......that's life I guess, if not ..I'll be on the phone with them and hopefully work out anything that might need dealing with - I got my fingers crossed!

Sounds like you could have benefitted from my book: htt://www.101projects.com/rebuild.htm
It goes over what you need to ask your rebuilder so that you are guaranteed that they know what they are talking about. For engine rebuilders, I recommend Alex Wong (310-822-4566), Walt at Competition Engineering (www.competitioneng.com), Tom Woodford (1-760-731-7535), or Jerry Woods... -Wayne

I'll throw in a second vote for Walt at CE. I didn't know Wayne promoted him until I saw the reference(s) in the rebuild book. Walt is usually always available to chat with, he'll drop what he's doing to talk personally with you and will give you candid advice. He usually does all the technical machining, porting etc. himself so you'll need to be patient. To give you an idea, I sent my top end (heads, P/C's, connecting rods, etc) to him in mid March and I just got off the phone and my parts are 99.9% finished. Can't beat 2 generations of Porsche engine machining/building experience.

Walt took about 3-4 months to do the machine work for the engine in the book. That was one big reason why it was so late. In his defense, his wife was battling cancer then and it wasn't a good time for him. It's also not a good time right now, since she recently lost that battle. I recommend Walt, but I am aware that he is *very* behind on the work as he struggles with day-to-day life...

Wayne,
I had no idea. I feel bad now calling and asking how things were coming. Not that I was pushing, just curious. You would never know from talking with him. I will definitely keep that in mind. My condolences, of course.....

It's not super-public knowledge, but it certainly wasn't advertised too much either...
