Air duct engine shroud restoration

Hi all,

I'm searching for information on restoring the fibreglass engine cover.
Maybe someone knows a thread covering the subject?

I guess fixing cracks is pretty straight-forward but does anyone have experience with repainting after repair?
It's a 3.0sc so a paint code and spec for the red would be useful.

Many thanks in advance!

Best regards
Steve

It's not paint, the color is part of the fiberglass.

Thanks for your reply, i guessed as much that the original colour is in the gelcoat, i was wondering how people usually restore them after they've suffered years of abuse!!

Fibreglass repair is easy following the usual practise (plenty of information available, see Corvette, Lotus or fibreglass boat repair). I used Epoxy resin for my repairs and it is holding up well for more than 10 years. For paint I am using engine enamel which is available in a wide range of colors (also spray cans). Engine enamel is somewhat more resistant to oil, fuel and heat and more easy to clean.

Have fun with your project. To install s nice and shiny engine shroud is a rewarding project.

Define "restore."
If you want it to look factory without painting, wet sand it with 400 grit sandpaper. It'll remove most of the oil and gunk stains.
Most paint jobs that I've seen on them looks ratty after a few years, FWIW.

After the wet sand, what final treatment would you recommend?
I guess without something the oil and heat will affect it quickly no?

Wax. A few of coats of automotive paste wax. Unless you want to go through the trouble of clear coating it.
