My piston debate ..
Final piece of my high compression 2.7RS build is the pistons ... I’m building a sport street / DE / occasional track engine built as much for TQ as HP.
I’d really like CP 4032 pistons ... but regrettably CP do not do 90mm in 4032 .. CP are suggesting 2618 can be used with almost as tight clearance. I’m just concerned longevity (60k miles, ring lands) won’t really be there with 2618. JE can supply custom pistons in 4032 but piston design might not be quite as on the mark as CP. Cost is near-as the same. What’s the better option? |
I think Wossner is really good , same alloy as Mahle . They are in Germany .

Have the ring lands hard anodized. I know JE offers this, perhaps CP does as well.

Other coatings??
What other coatings are worth doing? Cost effective
Ceramic coating the crown? Dry lubricant on skirts Heat emisivity coating piston interior Since we’re not science deniers, what works and what is worth it?? Ignorance personified, but curious, Chris |
I have ceramic coating on the piston dome, head chamber and exhaust port, don't know how much effect it has, but I have a 3.0 twin plug with no front cooler and so far no heat issues. That said I plan to add a cooler over this winter.
I DFL coated my bearings and piston skirts, etc, I think it's a good investment. I only coat the softer metal. (ie coat the bearing, not the journal) My headers are ceramic coated, they still get bloody hot, but cool down way faster. Not sure on heat emissivity coating for inside pistons, etc, I have an easier time believing a coating acting like a barrier, than wicking heat away. |
