Question 911 1984 blue smoke

Hi,

I will buy a 911 1977 with a 3.2l. The owner said to me there is blue smoke when the motor is hot. what can it be and what are the possibilities of problems? It's the first time I write in a forum...let me learn from you.

Thanks, Claude

Hi Claude,
First off, welcome to the board!
Blue smoke means oil burning. 911 motors will smoke if they are overfilled; it's a common problem. The fact that you say the motor smokes when it's hot tells me it *may* be overfilled. Do a search on the 911 Technical Forum about oil levels and learn the correct way to read the dipstick.

Be aware that some 3.2 motors suffer from worn valve guides. That will also give you smoke, usually on deceleration.

Before you buy this car, pay to have it checked it out by a qualified Porsche mechanic, or it may turn out to be a money pit.

Thank Doug and Wayne,

I think the motor burns a lot of oil because it's a really big smoke...from behind...the car is invisible so... a lot...
Just before getting check I was thinking is was the rings...it is possible?

It could be rings but that is a lot less likely than the reasons suggested above by Doug. It could just be residual oil left behind from an overfill.

The answer to Waynes' question will tell you if it's an overfill problem as opposed to worn out motor parts.

Whatever the case you need a proper inspection done to find out why it is smoking. Only then will you know the value of the car. As it is the car is worth anywhere from $3k to $11k.

OK,

I will do a proper inspection. The problem could be oil overfill, but what are the commons problems if it's not that???

Thanks everyone!!!

Say it's oil overfill.

Shouldn't he be able to see it visually like finding oil in the airbox (I don't know how the 3.2 vents the oil tank)? Could be a simple as that.

One thing for sure, i'd get the car checked.

Claude, Is this the car located in Granby? If you need any help regarding a local shop (not dealer) to get a PPI done in our area, let me know.
