Tensioners and mystery spacer
Just about to button things up. Anyone notice anything abnormal? I need need safety collars as the old ones cracked while tightening. Just want to make sure I haven’t missed anything.
Also I found a 10x17x6 mm spacer that I though came from this area but doesn’t seem to belong... |

Can’t upload photos on mobile so guess they’ll have to wait.

spacer
The one spacer in the middle goes between the tensioner and the idler arm.For the best result for your motor send the idler arm to Henry at Supertec to be widened and you will not need the spacer.Ciao Fred

The spacer I found appears too small...
How important is a spacer between the tensioner and idler? ![]()

The spacer that came with the carrera tensioners is 28mm OD X 15mm ID X 10mm (9.90mm) width.

The spacer on the left might be the one that goes under the mount (24) for either the throttle pivot or MFI mount.

Someone rebuilt the engine in the past and I haven't found anything 'wrong'. It was time for gaskets, a valve job and new rings. Nothing abnormal in the cam drive, so I'm leaning towards thinking the spacers aren't that critical. Anyone diasgree?

Please do what Fred suggested or at a bare minimum buy the $5 spacers.
I worry your idler arms will walk under load without that spacer in there. andy |

Ah I didn't realize there was an off-the-shelf one available. Looks to be PN 930.105.513.00 ?

That looks like the right part, the tensioner rebuild kits are inexpensive also and now would be a good time to do that job while you are in there.

If the Carrera kit spacer is 9.9mm then I'll still have a ~2mm gap...
Someone on ESR noticed something similar (though they had the wider idlers). https://www.early911sregistry.org/forums/showthread.php?98097-930-chain-tensioner-install-question

They are supposed to float a bit, just not so far that they could fall off the tensioner pin. If they were hard up then the friction could be an impediment to the tensioning action.

Did you check chain alignment to make sure everything is straight first? That will determine where the idler needs to sit and that in turn will determine how thick of a spacer you need. And remember that you will need room for some movement of the idler.

Indeed. My case has a bit of a lip where the case halves meet, so I had to muck around quite a bit to make sure, within reason, that the straightedge was parallel to the sprockets and that they were shimmed accordingly.
It sounds like the factory spacers will prevent the idlers from moving more than 2mm outboard. That's already a lot more tolerance than what they want the sprockets shimmed to... I'll get ahold of the spacers (or fab something up), but I really question if the idler could really walk outward enough that the tension pins falls off. If anything, it looks like the idler should be spaced out a bit. ![]()
