911 Mag case engine parts
 

I have acquired a number of 911 engines that were taken apart. Before I get into identifying all the relevant parts belonging to these engines, I wondered if there was a listing anywhere of the parts that comprise a complete 911 motor. I am aware of the various publications that identify the parts, such as parts catalogues and Wayne's Rebuild book, but wondered if there was a handy spreadsheet that summarized them so I wouldn't have to create one from scratch.

Why would anyone spend that time when there is a parts manual which tells you how many of which parts there are in each location? The parts of consequence you can easily figure out - 12 rocker shafts, one right and one left cam, six rods, that kind of thing. If you don't know things like that, you have bitten off quite a chore. You don't need to know how many 13mm wrench nuts there are. If you run out when assembling an engine, you just go get some more.

But maybe someone has done something like this.

Nonetheless, sounds like fun to have "a number of [disassembled] 911 engines." Likely to be some parts missing, some too worn to reuse, and so on, but enough for at least one good engine?

Walt, If I was going to rebuild these motors, I wouldn't have asked for help with a simple question such as I did. I am not an engine builder nor is it my business to buy and sell Porsche parts, I am simply trying to determine what there is so I can accurately describe what I have when I sell them. These motors were part of an much larger inventory of Porsche parts accumulated over probably 40 + years ( mostly 356 parts) I got from the estate of a friend, most of which I will sell off over time at reasonable prices. My goal is to get my capital back and maybe a bit extra for my time, expense and effort at sorting out and helping the widow get out from under a tremendous burden.
I have always found the Pelican board to be very helpful and courteous in answering questions. I did not find your response particularly helpful, and would go so far as to say it bordered on being insulting.

Why not just advertise the bunch of parts you have as a batch? Unless you have major assemblies, or are going to do some assembly, it is just a bunch of parts, no?

Had you said you intended selling these parts, your request still wouldn't have rung a bell. What Gordon suggests is sort of how most dispose of good used parts, whether they have a lot or a few. The usual purchasers know what they need. A less usual purchaser, who might bid on the whole lot, would be even more knowledgeable. Piecemeal sales look like you can get more money, but over more time and with more effort? Only you can do the inventory either way.

I am trying to think of a situation where parts are listed as so many of this, so many of that, for a whole assembly. None I can think of in the automotive world. DIY electronics kits or plans often have such a list, but the parts count is very much smaller than for an engine.

This isn't going anywhere so I will compile the database myself. When you have a lot to sift through, it's necessary to be organised and that was the intent on my first post. At least then I can be clear on what I have and what I'm offering to potential purchasers.

Yes, there are a lot of Porsche snobs here and of course they know everything. May I suggest visiting Automobile Atlanta, there you will find an exploded view of 911 engines along with parts lists.

Hard to find but is what you need.

Surprisingly, I found my local Porsche Dealer very helpful in this regards. It seems like there is a focus on supporting these old cars. I went to see if I could buy a shop manual and parts catalogues so I could know what parts I need to buy (opposite of your problem :) ) The parts manager there told me to save my money, I could come in and get copies of sections in their manuals and they would print out what ever parts diagrams I needed, etc. So far they have lived up to their word.
