Has anyone actually tried thread locker? Either Loctite red or the sleeve 640 mentioned above?

torque 38 lbs.
IMHO 38 FT.LBS is wrong for these motors.There have been some heads that the washer is collapsing the surface and the nuts loosen.A proper stud will hold its torque.Porsche engineers decided 24 lbs. was good for a very calculated reason and I know I am not smarter than them.Canyon studs work well and keep their torque.Fully threaded I have not seen any loosen.Ciao Fred

I did some research on head studs for my 3.2 to 3.4 build. I can't recall which thread it was but saw where there was an issue with head nuts coming loose. I can't recall which studs they used but the main reason why I went with the Supertec studs for my build.
Do a search on Pelican that's where I found it. It was an older thread that I remember. |
Supertec has "a" solution. The 993 Turbo head studs are the solution I see all the big time high performance engine builders using....

ARP specs out 38ft/lb torque. Not sure whether to use the same torque spec to re- torque.
Using any type of thread locker seems like a one way ticket, and no way to re-check the torque down the road. If I end up swapping out the head studs, I'd go 993 turbo. |
ARP studs
I called ARP Tech Support this AM.
I explained the situation regarding their product. He took the time to look in their call history, and found no complaints called in. He also said that he would call their largest volume re seller,,,, EBS & spoke to Don...EBS engine builder Don reported no problems with kits that he put into his builds. And no complaints from customers that purchased the kit Good enough for me!! |

ARP has been in the automotive fasteners business since the 70's. Fasteners are their only product. They ARE the manufacture No disrespect to Supertec, but I doubt that they do research /development /manufacturing head studs As far as why I asked the question,,, What do you suppose Henry would say if you asked him the same question about his studs |
You buy what you want and ask questions of biased sources if you want. I ask people that actually build high output high performance engines for a living. They use parts that work or their reputations suffer...

What nut size does the ARP stud take, m10 x 1.25, m10 x 1.50.

I’ve read about this issue happening fairly often with ARP head studs. Steve Weiner has a comment somewhere on pelican where he kinda explains why it happens. I went with supertec head studs for my build for this very reason.

So did anyone come with a fix, other than tearing the motor down?

I contacted Peter Dawe at the start of my engine build and he said he uses Supertec head studs due to problems with the ARP ones. As I am hoping this is a one time task I took his recommendation and bought Supertec. I feel this was a safe decision based on the available information. 993 head studs are not the only solution of top engine builders.
