996 GT3 crank failure?
 

A friends gt3 started to rod knock suddenly. When a shop tore it down it was the number one rod bearing that had failed, they said it was quite common and almost always number one.
They also said that under size rod bearings wasn't available, so they couldn't grind the crank.
Is this true?

BTW, a new 997 gt3 crank was the preferred remedy, surprisingly cheep too!

There are a couple crank repair companies here in the states that repair spun cranks and they come back virtually perfect.

No doubt, but that would most likely be more expensive repair than a new crank. But that a slight grind and undersized bearing would be very affordable...
Certainly if I could get the damaged crank for a reasonable price...

That crank's oiling galleries are smaller than that of a 3.0, 3.2 crank. Don;t know their reasoning for doing that, am sure they had one. The difference in the GT pump and the 3.3 turbo pump may have been their reasoning. What effects do the smaller holes have, more pressure but less volume? Would be interested in knowing the provenance of the design.

Pressure side of 3.3 and GT3 pumps are the same. Scavenger sides are different.
