1965 engine overhaul

Vin:301731
Engine: 901822
Trans: 101707
Looking at overhauling the engine and transaxle on my 65 911.
1. Would like to increase the HP, so what do I need to do to do that. What piston, parts..
2. I understand that a running 65 original engine has value. I have owned it for 40 years and all that has been done is valve guides replaced on left side due to smoking on startup.
Will changing the HP hurt the value of the engine?
3. I live in the North Dallas/McKinney Texas, does anyone know of a good independent Porsche shop in this area? May try to overhaul myself but may not.
Any information or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks Gary

Gary- reach out to Ed Mayo, he's the most knowledgeable man for 500 miles when it comes to early Porsche engines. And tell him "304065" sent you. His shop is in Euless, Tx.

Next, some research. I started with the SAME question you are asking in 2007 with this thread:

Suggestions for warmed over 2.0 901/05?

Ultimately I concluded that rebuilding it with 9,5:1 compression pistons and more modern camshafts was the best approach. People who value 1965 motors don't do it because of the huge horsepower, they care about originality first (otherwise why not bolt in a 3,6 it fits in the spot)

You can search here for the tag 901/05 to see ALL the posts up until the dyno run of that engine. It was fun, I learned a lot, I spent around $10,000 on parts and tools and it took me FOUR years. (It doesn't TAKE four years, you can do it in a week of evenings, but LIFE intervenes)

Good luck!

Thanks for your input, have had the 65 for 42 years. Had she still has s lotbof rust that has be cutout and/or covered up. Finished a serious mod in 1985, so car is far from original but has matching numbers. It’s a running Solex engine. Kind of hate to alter the engine because there are few of them left. The engine and matching transaxle is probably worth as much as the entire car. Will try to download a couple of pictures . I am going to backdate the back licenses plate holder and front parklights and horn grills, I still have them. Remove the wing but leave the wide-body. [QUO

Thanks again, gary

I know the car wasn't worth anything in 1985 , but that's a crazy project , Selling the original motor and trans seems the logical option if you want more horsepower . I would be interested in the trans.

These days an original matching numbers 65 is highly sought after particularly if the engine and trans are original to the car, don't split them up. If you have sentimental attachment to the car, it's your car, and you should do whatever you want, purists be damned. On the other hand it would be easily a six figure restoration project to make that car look like an original 65 again, but such a car would be a great time machine and would allow you to enjoy it in a different way.

If you don't have Bruce Anderson's or Wayne's books they detail all the possible upgrades.

A lot of it comes down to budget. And of course your long term goals for the car.

You may want to just replace the motor with something newer and with more power and keep the original on a shelf, due to the value of an early car.
