964 Heads - Ceramic damage

So I am starting to take apart a 964 motor.
When I removed the cat converter a whole bunch of schrapnel fell out of the front of the cat converter (where it connects to the crossover pipe).
Well, I think it came out of the cat converter, I don't think it was hiding in the shield area...

What is it?

This is a running motor, although it has been rebuilt before... surely it's not parts of a blown apart piston??

Parts of the broken ceramic exhaust port inserts. Around the exhaust port and valve guides.

yep, you are right.
Here are the photos. The first one looks really bad. I am not sure these can be repaired? Any suggestions always appreciated.
