Weber 40IDA Rebuild Question

Wayne - I guess that this is technically not a rebuild question, but it was not covered in your weber rebuild article in "101 Projects" either. So, the Webers on my '66 were leaking on the inside, so I purchased the rebuild kits. I have successfully removed three of the four brass plugs above the needle valves (They are very tight), but I managed to damage the hex nut on the fourth one and I do not know what to do. I have used carberator cleaner and WD-40 to no avail. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Parts are still available for these, although they can be difficult to locate. In the 101 Book, I think I actually had to cut one of the bolts off when the soft brass deformed and stripped. If it comes to this, try a Dremmel tool. I'm sure the application of a little bit of heat would work too, but I would be nervous about damagine the carburetor with too much heat.

there's a metal seal under the cap, against the carb top. you can use a small sharp chisel and carefully remove the top of the cap, leaving the outer threaded, stuck part in place. them make a few careful cuts around the edge, thru the brass, just down to the metal seal with an air saw or dremel tool. then get out the tiny chisel again and chip out the bits between the cuts. if you manage to notch the carb top surface, a machine shop can do a quick spot face.
