2.0lt sand cast heads..... Salvageable?

Hi All,

I will start this off by saying I am not going to use these heads to rebuild the original block right now.

When are heads beyond saving? When I purchased my 1966 911 ( built late Oct- early Nov 65) the original 2.0lt came in boxes. Inspection of the parts found something had been swallowed by the #6 cylinder (small nut maybe). A couple of good "dents" in the combustion chamber and the top of the cylinder were the clues to this.

***The heads had also been opened to accept 90mm piston/cylinders. ***

The date codes on these heads are Jul and Aug 1965.

Can the heads be returned to original sizing? Does this make sense? Is there value in keeping them at 90mm (to someone else)

Do I keep these to stay with the original case? (case also has been opened up to 90mm)

I am rebuilding the original case, but will be using 2.7 or 2.4 heads. My builder feels that given the engine is modified already, the most cost effective way to get it back together is to go with a set of 2.4 or 2.7 heads on the 90mm nikies.

Given the extreme price of anything early 911. When do parts like this become "unusable".

Thanks
Joe D

are those areas corrosion in the alum?

Dents from something entering the combustion chamber while running. No corrosion. This thing must have been running super rich or not driven hard. Lots of carbon build up. The PO did ssay he didn't like the "peakyness" of the engine when he ran it.

I just pulled my top end. Some ring issues. Scoring etc. Carbs where jetted correctly. Mine were as black as that after 1000 KMs

those areas could be welded up and surfaced.
