Engine Values. 3.5L motor & transmission sold on BAT

Not sure if this is the right forum.....how many of you follow Bring a Trailer? Curious on thoughts regarding the sale of this motor and transmission combo for $71k. This package seems to have all the right stuff and it's done so you save yourself a year of having to wait to get it done.

I'm guessing at $71k there is $15-$20k premium on it since its done, and no wait time but if you were to build something like this what would be a ballpark cost to do so? Just trying to gauge the market and costs as I'm ready to embark on another engine build.

It seems a bit expensive for what it is…..I wouldn’t pay that!

That's good to know. I have a completely rebuild, fresh, 0 miles, 3.6L 911 Turbo hot rod engine ( 87 -88 MY ) for sale.

is this "rebuilt by 3 ex (old) Andial race engine builders" ?

Brad912 06-18-2021 12:06 PM

Its what people are willing to pay. buying a complete engine ready to go I would think a premium would be paid. but i have no idea what it cost to build the motor.

The transaxle is nothing special.....nor are the gear choices. The Quaife is a great if you are using the car on the street or for autocross. It's not a great choice for a track car.

The engine has some nice parts but could be a lot better. If I were building it with that budget, I'd use a GT3 crankshaft and a GT3 oil pump. I would also prefer different rods and pistons....and cams. I would also use Xtreme heads.

Note that the price did not include an engine management system.

Winders why is a quaife not good on a race track?

Not to get off topic

The Quaife is a torque biasing differential and is not a true limited slip differential. Lift a wheel and the other wheel gets no torque. Not good!

Ahhhh good to know

I noticed the auction and wondered if the engine fell into the, ‘you can’t build one for that price’ or not. Of course instant gratification is always a factor…. As long as it doesn’t need additional work.

Kind of what I was looking for too… from my last engine build 2 years ago a 3.2SS I’m assuming this build would have been in the $30k range back then… now I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s $35k or $40k to get one built if you had someone handle it from A to Z.

The seller of that engine is an old friend.

Raced in IMSA a bit back in the day.

A Quaife is a TBD as Winders has said. I used a Guard TBD for many years on track and in racing. With proper car set up, TBDs can be just fine.

With my configuration and application, the difference was not even a second a lap.

I switched to a Guard LSD a few years back for a number of reasons-- lap time was not one of them.

Matt Monson 06-21-2021 07:31 AM

Fully 50% of the lap time improvement one gets with an LSD is on the lock up under braking aspect if it. One can brake later and carry 1-2 mph more through the corner because of it. It’s way more than what it does under throttle.

JoeMag 06-21-2021 11:18 AM

Yepper…. MUCH more stability (read keeping rear end from becoming front end) under braking by keeping rear wheels somewhat locked together and spinning at same speed with rear weight bias.

It looks like a nice pile of parts. Value depends a lot about the buyers budget.
Could you replicate the engine and trans for $70K? probably but anyone building air-cooled 911 engines these days will tell you that supply chains a knackered and prices are up. Not to mention the plethora of sub-standard parts is frightening.
I'm thinking "a bird in the hand" might make the price reasonable.

Thanks Henry… good points.
