Spark plug connector 'water cap' replacing

Done a bunch of searching on this but nada found. I'm trying to replace my very old/very hard "water caps"/"boots" on my spark plug connectors. I've tried 2 ways:
#1 Remove the old cap (cut/break it). Unscrew the plug wire from the top of the connector, then carefully pry the boot over the sharp 'wood screw' that screws into the plug wire. Then work the new cap back over the screw, onto the connector, then carefully replace the plug wire boot back over the screw (w/o tearing up the boot), and finally screw the plug wire back on.
#2 Or, Remove the old cap (cut/break it), stretch the new one over a conical shaped socket (0.8" dia), butt it up to the spark plug wire and force it off the socket onto the spark plug end of the connector, then wiggle it onto the thinner part.
'Caps' from our host as "Spark Plug Connector Boot", 819200020206
Photos: 2 connectors with old caps, boots & wires attached;x and 2 caps with conical socket (old cap on left, new cap on right)
Anyone know a better way?
Thanks, cheers, jt

Those are "air shields", they keep the cooling air in the head area. Most plug connectors have a rubber boot at the plug end, yours don't, if so remove that cap. You have nothing there, I just use a internal expanding snap ring pliars to open the air shield and slide over the connector end, no need to unscrew from wire.
