SC camshaft regrind to 964
Hi everyone,
I'm thinking to fit 964 profile cams to my SC, maybe someone can help me with the following points? Regrind vs new chill-cast blanks, is there any disadvantage to regrind your old cams vs having brand new ones? Also Dougherty website has no cost information, how much would i have to pay to regrind two camshafts? Advise gratefully received Steve |
You can try WEB and others to get pricing.

But to add one more wrinkle to the mess, you literally can't get new cam blanks right now because the supply chain is messed up. You can send them your old cams and they'll weld and regrind, but plan on waiting awhile. |

You might want to check with William Knight (Knightrace on the forum) about his M1 Melissa cam, it's made specifically for CIS engines. I believe the 964 is still a compromise.
But, if you drive a lot on the street, I'd stick with the stock cams, but to each their own. |
DRC did mine in April 2020 at the cost of 235$ per cam. Now I only had mine re-ground to original SC spec, which seems pretty good, the little torque spike at around 3.5k rpm makes for a very nice elastic feel, I don't know how the other cams feel. Prices for a 964 or whatever reground at the time was the same.
Write John an email, he answered quickly. The turnaround for the work was very fast (1 week maybe including shipping both ways) and looked good. I haven't checked on wear other than at 1k miles, so can't really comment beyond that they seem to do what they were supposed to, and he was very helpful. Phil |

New billets are hard to come by right now. We waited a while for cams from JohnD, not his fault. We also waited a long time for cams from William, which did not require a new billet, they were done by WEB.
If you have SC cams and want a 964 profile or the M1 profile, neither should require billets. If you want to know pricing from John D, email him and ask??? That would seem the simple thing to do. Cheers |

Am I right that for the typical regrind (you want more lift and more duration), you need to keep the same diameter base circle and weld before regrinding? Or will reducing the base circle inherently give you more lift and duration?

It depends on how much lift and duration you want. In general you can reduce the base circle to get more lift and duration to some degree. For example you can grind T cams to E profile and E cams to S profile. Mod Solex can be ground on E cams and Mod S can be ground on S cams. If you want more lift and duration then the cams need to be welded up or you start with new blanks. john |
