Another case sealant question

Ive pulled my early case apart. It looks like the factory had no sealer on what I call the main caps.
It was only on the outer perimeter.
Wayne's book show it everywhere. Is this for uniformity on the case halves or ??
Thanks lyndon

Hi Lyndon
my understanding is that the factory did not apply sealant in that area.

However many reputable builders do apply it and others do not. I don't know which method is best.

One day, I will do a test to measure my oil clearance both with, and without sealant on the bearing webs, to see if it makes an appreciable difference.

The factory specifically states to NOT install sealer on the main webbing. Other reputable engine builders do though. To each their own.

Personally, I am of the opinion that anything between the two surfaces affects the bearing clearances and should be avoided. The case halves didn't have sealer on them when the align boring tasks were completed, so adding anything will change your measurements.

I've wondered how effective sealant on the webs would be, since we know that they do fret/move. I'd think the sealant would be compromised by the movement.

Exactly!!!!

If this is hard to understand, then think this way. What are you actually sealing from leaking?

That's my thinking. But I'm no expert. There must be some reasoning. I'm following the book under the premise it's correct. Or just this bit is not correct.
I'm inclined to follow Porsche I think.
