Porsche Circlips in JE Pistons

2.0L
JE Pistons. Can fit the STD circlips.
I just don't understand why the JE ones are so hard to fit. There is no load from what I can see
The Porsche ones are thinner when measured but fit fine.
Im using used ones that look and feel perfect.
Advice would much appreciated.
Thanks lyndon

clips

Get your vernier caliper out.The JE clips are harder to install because the wire diameter is larger hence more tension upon installation. When the motor is tuned to the upper limits of timing and mixture the piston pin is pushing against the clip from side to side. This will raise a gnurled edge on the outer groove of the clip making it harder to remove the pin. When you use the standard thinner pussy clip the pin will knock it out of the groove and the pin will contact the cylinder wall and the end of its life is coming.I admit the early 911S clips with the tang on it is really nice to use.But beware.Fred

Yes , the groove is bigger in a J&E piston and the Porsche cir-clips fit too loosely , I would not risk the consequences . I imagine J&E knows what is required .

I spoke with my mechanic and I was informed that the J&E clips were used. He said that he told me that the J&E clips were a pain to get in though. Its been a few years since build. Told me to check my parts box that was given back with old 2.7 pistons and cylinders to see the stock clips still in old pistons with pins. He was right.. Sorry for the confusion Lyndon.

Without the Stomski tool that Al posted, it is beyond frustration dealing with the JE clips. With the S tool, no issues installing them. And as others have said, you have no choice but to use the JE clips, the grooves in the pistons are sized for them.

Installing the JE circlips is one thing. Removing them without gouging and destroying your pistons is another...

I can't recommend this enough.
Place the gudgeon in. ( It needs a stop ) Fit the offside clip.
I'm right handed.
Then install the piston.
I can't believe how well this works.

I’ve heard the same about the Stomski tool for the spiral locks, so I got one. Looking forward to it.

For future reference, is there a trick to removing those clips?

A tip worth adding here because it applies to both the JE and the factory vaginal clips. Porsche factory documentation says DO NOT reuse the clips. Also some have encountered possible fatigue of the JE clips from over-compressing them with the install tool.

JE Wire Locks – A Cautionary Tale

So the point being here is certainly do not use old clips and use minimal compression to install new clips, be they JE or factory clips. There's some good video clips in that thread I linked above, for anyone who's interested in how the clips are installed w/out the "injector" tool.
