Looking for engine salvage experts
 

I have an aluminum 930/16 case from an '83 3.0L SC that needs some reconditioning. The fan shroud mount broke off, and I'm having a hard time finding an old case to use as "parts" to cut and weld back on a new fan mount. Does anyone have recommendations of salvage yards or engine rebuilders who may have non-rebuildable cores?

See picture for reference. My earlier post in the Classifieds didn't get much traction, so I'm now looking for recommendations on repair shops and parts dealers to contact.

That case looks pretty crusty, before trying to track down a salvage case for welding you might want to see if you can remove all studs and get it cleaned up for inspection. Might be better off looking for a new used case. Just my 2 cents

That is not super structural in a critical sense, just more area to hold down the fan housing band.
1. Are you trying to sell it?
2. Is it already sold to a customer and must be perfect to protect your reputation.
3. It's my own junk I want to get running and I do not care if it is perfect?
I was a certified welder in aluminum...Retired. You could clean up the edge and weld on a bent plate that would match ok. Are are subbing out the work or sitting there TIG welding a bead and trimming it up and repeat till perfect, much time but easy to do unless you can not then it gets pricy.

TIG welding an external part of an aluminum case which fractured and was broken off should be easy for someone with a TIG and the needed skills for TIG. If it is part external, and part internal (i.e., part of it holds a seal or bearing), it needs the attention of a machine shop to make sure all that is true.

Or is the broken off part missing? I can't make out from your picture of the damaged case just what is broken.

I'd call Ollies. Back when, they told me they had a stock of damaged sand cast cases to cut up for parts to fix major damage, as from rods flailing around. So I'd guess they have some newer ones as donors.

Its an easy piece to weld back if you have the missing piece. Making a new piece to weld on that looks presentable isn't that difficult either, but a bit more time consuming.
Possibly you might not need to do anything if you can get the fan to strap down anyway....

Thanks, everyone. This is great feedback. I'll follow up on these leads. I have a really good aluminum welder and machinist who'll tackle this if I can find a part for repairs. The broken piece is all external with no visible internal damage. I plan to have the case dipped, measured, align bored, decked, and polished after it's repaired so I can sell it or build it -- haven't decided yet which way to go. I'd like to get a 2.7 for originality but a 3L sounds attractive for sure but a lot more $$ to build.
