Advice Needed.

I need advice on a couple matters:

1. I plan to use carburetors on a 3.2. Is it okay to use the original camshafts? And is the dialing the same?

2. Do I need special manifold to head caskets? Do I need to use the rubber spacers?

Your input would be heavily appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yes the original cams will work. Not ideal, but they will work.

Yes you need manifolds and the spacers to minimize heat transfer into the carbs.

On big issue is the lack of a choke. Cold starting will be a little more challenging. Fuel will be slow to atomize so expect the start and warm up process to require constant attention for the first 2-3 minutes.

Carburetors are a lot of fun, provided you are willing to put in the time to tune and fiddle with them

Your distributor is probably no ideal either.

Bruce Anderson’s book is a good place to start on gathering knowledge on what’s involved. And what the real benefit could be.

Fuel economy is particularly good on the 3.2, with fuel injection. Have you considered the Triumph triple itb's with megasquirt fuel injection? You could gain some power, keep the fuel economy and still start instantly from cold.

Thank you for the response. The reason for carburetors is simplicity.

Thats only depending on skill set. Carburators needs tuning too.

The reason you need correct carb style manifold gaskets (and not stock 3.2 gaskets) is they need to cover the cutout in the intake where the fuel injectors would go. Clewett sells them. You need 12 plus the correct spacers.

Why are the original cams not ideal? I've a 3.2 and I know people put 964 cams in, not necessarily with carbs.

Its not that the original cams will not work. Part of the advantage of running carbs it that you can also run more aggressive cams than the airflow meters (CIS or Motronic) in factory fuel injection can tolerate. However these cams also require different pistons with different valve reliefs for the more aggressive cams.
964 cams are more aggressive than stock SC/Carrera cams but will still work with stock injection. 993SS or equivalent are about as aggressive as you can go with stock injection and pistons. I agree with safe. Getting a engine to run with carbs is not too hard. Getting a engine to run well with carbs takes a lot of correct setup and tuning.

Just fax PMO and Mr Parr will hook you up.Ciao

The question no one asked is WHY? Why are you contemplating this? Are you building a motor specifically for carbs? Do you just want to replace the Motronic? If so why?

Assuming are talking about a 32 84-89 motor here.... If you are just looking to replace the Motronic with carbs, it will not "simplify" your engine. You will complicate it... Using stock cams, exhaust etc, I will argue the performance gains will be minimal and the driveability will suffer. Yes, will get improved throttle response, but that is about it without other mods. Couple the carbs with higher CR and a more aggressive camshaft profile, proper exhaust.... Now we are getting somewhere performance wise...

So, tell us, what are your exact goals with the engine so we can point you in the correct direction.....

If I had motronic and wanted better throttle response I'd replace the afm with maf.
