3.8 pistons -- what's a good weight?

What would be considered a good light weight 102.0mm pistons 12.5 cr?

Considering that for my Mahle 3.8 cyl's (I have the mahle 11.4cr 489g ones now).

Lightest I've ever seen are the 9M @450g

Check with CP.....

Thanks Bill... I have since found out EBS has 454g piston.

A good weight is whatever the engineers at the various manufactures have ENGINEERED their pistons at. Like Scott said, check with CP (who we have build our pistons), and perhaps check with JE and Mahle as well.

Then ask, what are you trying to achieve? What are the rest of the engine build specs? What are you trying to accomplish? A super light piston is awesome right up until the pin boss separates from the rest of the piston.... :)

Cheers

Thanks Jeff... Agree with you. Several engine builders noted the Mahle 11.4 102mm as race piston's were "heavy" piston's, so was just checking.

Joemag, if you have one, send me the weight via email, I can compare to some other pistons we have around...

Sent off to Jeff, however, for the knowledge of the forum, here's weight of spare piston. Mahle weight of blank piston supposed to be 489g, however, I do not have calibration weight to check scale either.

…got a calibration weight and my scale is dead on at 500g.

Just weighed a new Mahle Motorsports 102mm piston, no rings or pin: 482g.

Black 993. - could u post a pic of piston? There’s the 11.4 one that I have and a 12.3/4 one that is lighter.

Black 993 11-24-2021 06:35 PM

I can get it out of the box again if you want to see pics but it's the 11.4 spec. Just got the set. Slip-fit 102mm's. I weighed it on a digital postal scale I've had for years. Probably pretty accurate but obviously this isn't a measurement from the Livermore Laboratory.

Ok, thx… Mine does have some carbon on it but looks pretty light. Without a doubt they’re weighed and put into different weight groups in manufacturing. I do have another one like the pic and it’s 500g too.
