The bore diameter (mm) will determine the size of your ring compressor tool.

I can't tell you the size but after using the Wiseco ring compressing sleeve, I'd recommend getting one. I used one my brother loaned me. No real worry about breaking rings by having one catch.
If what I found online is correct, you have a 97mm bore.

The model for my 3.2 was RSC09500 Yours would be RSC09700

Here's a video my brother did of the ring sleeve in action. Only note would be to load the piston from the bottom rather than the top because of the taper the cylinders have.

+1 for the Wiseco. You can get them at Summit racing online.

Any compressable style tool will work. But, we get the solid tapered sleeve style ones for every application we build. The tapered sleeve style is very easy to use, where the compressable style work well, but are not as easy to use.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

^agree I've moved to the Wiseco sleeves, for 356 and many VW I have the factory tools.
In a pinch I still use a generic ring compressor, it can be done, but they're not well suited for the aircooled engines.

Hazet adjustable strap style works well.
