Bought Race Engine Advice
Hi all,
Looking for some advice on a race engine I bought recently. The engine was a spare for a Porsche fanatic that he needed to sell to pay for his other blown engine, it was built for Targa events but has never been run, hopefully i get it next week to my mechanic and e can start investigating. The specs: Engine # 63H02294 GT3 oil pump Maxspeed rods with ARP rod bolts Mahle racing 98mm pistons and barrels Recondition heads 964 camshafts Turbo fuel injection manifold Headers Stainless muffler 3L crankshaft EMU ECU master computer Fan and alternator assembly The actual block is a 3.2 and it is going into my SC which already has a 3.2 in it. If i go with the engine as is, I will need to rewire the car for the ECU and find a tuner. The other option is to leave my current manifold in and just replace earthing below that down. Questions - 1. I’ve done a lot of reading and everyone seems to think the Carrera stock manifold is actually better than the turbo manifold anyway? Is the above option of leaving my current 3.2 manifold on actually the better one for this engine swap out? 2. I’m not sure exactly which Mahle P&Cs are on the new engine as they are re ringed, but with the overall specs of the new engine, would they work with a stock 3.2 manifold and fuel injection? Would I need to do anything else to make it work ie dual plug it? 3. The race engine build is apparently at 12:1 compression, is this even possible / good? Would a 3.2 block handle that much compression long-term? 4. Has anyone built or know of anything similar to the engine this builder was going for? 5. Is the rewiring for the ECU worth it long-term or should I just stay with the Motronic? The car is a weekend driver and track/targa car so I’m happy for it to be as powerful as possible but i dont want a **** daily drive either. Any help is greatly appreciated! Are you sure on that compression? The turbo manifold on a normally aspirated engine is *less than ideal*. 12:1 compression is too high for a street engine and will require race gas. If you try pump gas, you'll burn it up.
Your 3.2L intake would outperform the turbo intake throughout the whole operating range. |
Was going to say, strange choice for an intake manifold.

Even stranger choice is high compression pistons with a 964 cam. Dynamic compression would be through the roof.
Given the choice of camshaft and intake manifold, I would suspect that the compression is close to stock, but that's just a guess. |

3.0 crank is 70.4 mm stroke, 3.2 is 74.4 mm

Hmmm who did you buy this from. I wouldn’t Buy a motor that was supposedly rebuilt that looks like that. Seriously who does that. It looks rebuilt 30 track seasons ago. And that compression. You gonna travel around with some drums of c16 haha. Get your money back and run!!!!

The 930 manifold is garbage, the 3.2 is leaps better with the 964 being the best for uniform airflow distribution through the runners.
Ditch the ECU, nobody runs that. There are a plethora of aftermarket ECU's out there now. I'm a really big recent Holley fan. There are plenty more that are great. The cylinders will handle 12:1 CR no problem as I'm boosted and I'm sure hit equivalent or higher cylinder pressures of a NA 12:1 motor. Nikasil is amazing. |
