Engine teardown question
Hi everyone,
Im in the process of a teardown and I’m stumped on a part on the bottom of the engine. I have a 77s but the engine was worked on in 1998 to replace pulled studs and add time serts in the case. The engine case is from an 73T MFI engine but has 77 cis components. Could this be a leftover part from the MFI? What are my options here? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. That’s the air injection that was standard fare on 76/79
The exhaust manifold is thermal reactor replacement pipes. Bruce |
Thanks Bruce, the air injection is not connected to anything. Looks like it has some sort of a plug so I don’t understand what the purpose of it is now that we’re not using thermal reactors.

Someone removed the smog pump and bracket. The studs have been replaced by bolts.
The plug is installed because the smog pump hose is gone. The check valve needs to be there otherwise exhaust gas will be pushed back up. |

Engine teardown question
I ordered the port plugs along with a all the gaskets and hardware to repair the oil leaks. Lo and behold the port plugs are back ordered for a month. I received an email tonight they are no longer available, they canceled my back ordered item and refunded me.
Any suggestions from the brain trust? Should I go to a hardware store and find something that may be similar? I believe the plugs are M10 thread pitch of 1.0mm. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Would this work:

A lot of people use 1/8" NPT plugs. The thread is very close to 10mm x 1.0. Not to say it's correct, but they do work. One problem with the "correct" plugs is that they occasionally loosen up and fall out. That doesn't happen with the pipe plugs because the thread is tapered.

Any 6mm fine thread part will do. There are plugs which are just a short threaded part, like a cut off piece of a bolt, with an Allen hex for screwing them in, which make a nice clean installation. You can use a thread locker to help ,keep them in, as they don't really get torqued - just screw in until flush. Hunt around in your favorite nut and bolt seller's catalog.
Or just buy short M6 fine thread bolts with the 10mm socket heads, and install with or without a crush washer. |
Also there is a plug in the 914 brake system that fits perfect.
Order it from the 914 catalogue. I had them back out over time on the track and finally got some allen head bolts, cut them to length, and have wired them in. Working so far. Alan |
Thanks gentlemen for all the great advise, got the plugs ordered.
