Seniors Moment-Leaking Cover

My apologies, but it’s been ten years since I took apart this ‘86 3.2 motor so I have forgotten more than I remember!
I have this sweating cover just below the crank pulley (which is dry BTW). Cannot remember what it’s for.





It’s not clear to me what is behind it other than the seal. Can I simply remove the cover and replace the seal without screwing something up?

There is a green rubber seal that goes on it to replace original red
Lube it and install without pinching

Are you certain the leak is not originating higher up? ie, crank pulley seal, or #8 nose bearing/case?

That was my first thought but then I noticed that the oily grime stopped just above the pic. Also, it’s dry behind the pulley. My guess is that the engine saddle cups the airflow upwards on the right side and helps the oil migrate upwards.
