Powder coating
Hi All,
I'm in the process of rebuilding my motor (85 930). While my parts are being machined I am planning on doing some powder coating. I saw the section in waynes book but have some additional questions. Can the inside of the valve covers be powder coated or do they need to be masked off? How about the chain tensioner housings? If they have to be masked do I need to worry about where I tape them off? I assume that I would need to tape on the outside of the sealing edges? Anyone done this? Thanks in advance, -LeoD BTW) Wayne if you read this, I love your new book! To date I have done all the work on my car (including disassembly). I plan on using your book to reassemble my motor. I'm sure you will all be hearing a lot from me in this forum ;^) |

Thanks for the feedback on the book! The rule of thumb is not to paint anything that touches the inside of the engine. I just used some high-temp engine paint on the valve covers used on the engine in the book.

Wayne would be correct...paint on the inside of the motor, exposed to oil is BAD. Imagine a thick coat of paint flaking off and getting run through the engine.
Actually I just painted my turbo valve covers with brake caliper paint. The temp rating on the paint was 900 degrees vs engine paints 500 degrees...plus the color was more to my liking. I also did the chain housing covers, the sheet metal including the fiberglass fan shroud...will post pics when i get it all put back together... good luck ian |

I would disagree that paint inside an engine has "always" been a bad idea. At least in the 80s, the trick with V8 engines was to put special paint in the lifter valley to speed the flow of oil back to the sump. Obviously, this is not an issue on a flat engine.
